The names Hedi Slimane and Celine went hand in hand for the past seven years. That is all about to change, as the 56-year-old French fashion designer announced his parting from LVMH’s fashion house.
Overall, Slimane was is well known for his immediate branding changes. Prior to his Celine tenue, he served as an artistic director of menswear at Yves Saint Laurent. That was until 2000, when he joined Dior Homme. As years went by, Slimane’s love for YSL persevered, and he returned to the fashion house as creative director. In his new role, he decided to cut “Yves” from the name immediately before his first show. Similarly, he dropped the accent over the “e” in Céline and introduced a new logo before his first show.
“[his] exigence and rigor have made it possible to redefine the codes of Celine whilst reaffirming its feminine and Parisian roots”
Though he was well known for making such radical changes moments before his shows, Hedi Slimane and the spotlight have never seen eye-to-eye. As the pandemic hit, he stopped doing live shows even when his fellow LVMH colleagues resumed regular shows. It was not until 2022, when he took over Los Angeles and Celine saw the runway lights again.
Celine’s parent brand LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton bid him farewell to Slimane in a brief statement:
“Under his creative and artistic direction, Celine has experienced exceptional growth and established itself as an iconic French couture house,” it said.
“The holistic vision of Hedi Slimane his exigence and rigor have made it possible to redefine the codes of Celine whilst reaffirming its feminine and Parisian roots,” it continued. “He has also remarkably enriched new territories for the maison such as the men’s silhouette, couture and haute parfumerie. The extraordinary journey taken together over the last seven years has made Celine a house with a formidable foundation for the future.”
Hedi Slimane’s next steps are yet to be unveiled. Plenty say he would be a perfect fit for Chanel after Virginie Viard stepping down earlier this year. Either way, the fashion world will be watching closely. And so will we.
