Michael Rider becoming the new artistic director of Celine is quite literally the definition of news travelling the speed of light. The Polo Ralph Lauren alumni replaced his predecessor Heidi Slimane in less than four hours making it one of the speediest replacement in history. Rider will began his reign in early 2025 with the timeline of his first collection yet to be confirmed.
“Celine is a maison with values very close to my heart and a beautiful heritage to build on,” Rider said. “I am honored to come back and shape the future of the maison together with the Celine team.”
“Michael’s vision, creative talent, together with his genuine nature and strong connection to Celine’s heritage make him a natural choice […].”
The American fashion designer is already very familiar with Paris as that is where his career began. He started working with Nicolas Ghesquiere at Balenciaga before moving onto his first Celine experience, working with Phoebe Philo for a whole decade. Rider’s most recent role was with Polo Ralph Lauren, where he served as a creative director until he announced his department earlier this year.
The fashion house did not stay silent on the planned appointment of Michael Rider either.
“I am delighted to welcome Michael back to Celine, a maison he knows intimately,” said Severine Merle, CEO of Celine. “Michael’s vision, creative talent, together with his genuine nature and strong connection to Celine’s heritage make him a natural choice to continue to build a long-lasting success for the maison.”
