High vs low porosity hair – probably one of the crucial factor when it comes to your hair routine. Yes, we know, navigating hair care in today’s world of constant flow of information and trends can be challenging as it is. And more so, if you have low porosity hair, which is what we want to focus on today.
Taking care of hair that is low porosity can be very challenging, to say for the least. Especially if your hair is curly and dry as well as it doesn’t absorb all the oils and moisture as easily which makes it very hard to give your hair the nourishment it needs. But with the right hair care routine, your low porosity hair can prosper, so let’s get to it.
Use water based products
This one is probably the most important. As low porosity hair has harder time to absorb moisture, it is crucial you use lightweight (water based) products to prevent heavy products weighing you hair down and extra unwanted buildup.
One of our personal favourite brands is Noughty, which is offers 97% natural an vegan friendly products. Another one of our favourite brands is Curlsmith, where you can take a quiz to get a personalised offer of products that work best for your type of hair.
Wash your hair with warm water
As controversial as this might seem, low porosity hair should be actually washed with warm water as opposed to cold. We know, you heard that you should use cold water on your hair right, left and centre, and so did we. But in the case of low porosity hair you need warm water in order for the hair cuticles to open and for the hair strands to take in the moisture. Trust us on this one.
Protect your hair at night
This one is still difficult for people to understand the importance of but it makes all the difference. Majority of hair breakage and frizz happens overnight so it is important to understand that our hair care doesn’t end the minute we go to bed. The best you can do for your hair overnight is to wear a bonnet. Our personal favourites are from LilySilk.
If you are not comfortable wearing a bonnet, another alternative would be using silk pillowcases and wearing protective hairstyles to minimise frizz and breakage
Apply products to damp hair
This mainly applies to curly hair as we’re sure you must have heard a gazillion times that all your products should be applied to soaking wet hair to get that bounce and shine. And yes, even though that works for a lot of gals, when it comes to low porosity hair it’s best to apply your products to damp hair. This will help your hair products to set in easier.
Use heat caps
Did we get this hack from TikTok? Maybe. Does it work though? Definitely! Using heat caps during your pre-poo treatments make such a huge difference! As we all know, it is much more difficult for low porosity hair to absorb treatments and moisture due to the hair cuticles being tightly packed. Heat, however, helps them to open up and makes the whole pre-poo process easier and most importantly, more efficient.
As far as heat caps go, we love the Kitsch one. You can just pop it into a microwave for a few minutes and use over your deep-conditioned hair.
