Tote bags were kind of on a side line for the past couple of years, but with the return to offices, they are slowly but surely on their way back to the spotlight. With the pandemic, consumers have completely shifted from large bags to the complete opposite. The past couple of years have basically carried one motto when it comes to handbags – the smaller the trendier.
Jacquemus pretty much started this trend with their Le Chiquito handbag, which took the internet by a storm. It was new, innovative, futuristic and most importantly, affordable. At least in terms of high-end designer price tags. Yes, the Le Chiquito handbag is pretty much only a fashion statement and its practicality is questionable (to say for the least) as it fits two packs of gum at most. But this ‘fashion statement’ unwind the small-hanbag trend. That includes the reimerge of y2k style shoulder bags. Prada has then followed with their nylon 2000 and 2005 re-editions which became one of the most popular styles of 2021. And still going strong. Gucci also jumped on the trend with their Ophidia shoulder bag.
Although we don’t see shoulder bags going anywhere anytime soon, tote bags are slowly gaining back their popularity. They might not be as cute or fashionable as smaller bags, however, their practicality is playing hugely in their favour, especially as people start to return back to offices. The first hint of this shift was given to us by Yves Saint Laurent when they came out with their Icare maxi shopper pricing it at over £3,620 (as of 16 Feb 2023). Even though the Icare maxi shopper has become the face of the ‘new-era’ tote bags, let’s not forget some of our office OGs. Yes, we’re talking Louis Vuitton‘s Neverfull, YSL‘s Rive Gauche or Marc Jacobs’ Tote Bag. And for that very reason we have put together some of our favourite tote bags for your inspiration (links included).
