Curly and Coily Hair: Myths & Maintenance Tips

curly and coily hair tips on the Catwalk Magazine

As all curly hair warriors can surely confirm, loving your naturally curly and coily hair is a journey. To say the least. There is a lot of trial-error moments, bunch of tears and a lot of myths. Yes, we know, we are by no means professional hairstylists or hairdressers, but we do know a thing or two and have gone through a lot of trial-errors (and tears) ourselves. So let’s get to it.

Starting off strong –

Curly hair is not suitable for short hairstyles (read: shoulder length and shorter)

…aka if you cut it short, it is going to ‘jump up’ and you will end up with a ‘broccoli’ hairstyle

In all honestly, this might be the number one “been there done that” situation and one of the biggest ‘hair-related’ fears for curly hair peeps out there. But if you want to try a shorter haircut, you should absolutely go for it. The key here is getting a proper shape and the right layers. And of course styling, but that is nothing a little bit of Google help won’t solve. Also look up some styles beforehand for inspiration – that always helps.

Airdrying only: ditch the hairdryer

The key is not to overheat your hair. As mentioned before, curly and coily hair tend to be naturally very dry. That is just what it is. So if you use a really high temperature setting straight away, it will most likely cause a heat damage. Not to sound like a broken record but once again, doing your research beforehand, always use a diffuser, adjust your setting to a lower temperature and make use of that cool air function. Your hair will thank you – you can trust us on that.

Definitely no bleaching

Okay, this one is a bit controversial because facts are facts and the fact is that you bleaching does take a toll on your hair. Especially on curly hair that is usually naturally already very dry. However, if you do your research beforehand and invest in a good quality service. After all, the problem is not bleaching itself, but the method of bleaching. As long as you have that covered, you can absolutely rock gorgeous golden locks without severe damage. Also a good nourishing hair mask and hair oils will do wonders for your blonde curls. The only two big ‘no-no’s are – NO box bleach and NO full platinum.

You will never need a curling iron

Contrary to the majority of people’s belief, a lot of curly and coily hair girlies use curling iron to define their natural hair pattern. A curling iron can be a literal game changer for day three+ curls. Especially for those framing pieces that just live their own life. It brings back structure and bounce to your hair.
