Matthew Williams exits Givenchy

matthew williams leaves Givenchy

Another house, another change in creative direction. Matthew Williams stepped down from the post of creative director of Givenchy after holding that title for over three years. His resignation will be effective from 1 January 2024 and left the world in utter shock. Williams joined the house in 2020, taking over Clare Waight Keller, who also left the brand after three years of service.

Willams’s last work for Givenchy will be the 2024 pre-fall collection set to be unveiled later in December. Although the reasons for his resignation are not officially confirmed, it is highly likely the designer plans to put all his focus and effort into developing his own brand – 1017 ALYX 9SM – founded in 2015.

“Leading the creative direction of Givenchy was, as I said upon my arrival in 2020, the dream of a lifetime,” said Williams. “Over these three years, I have strived to perpetuate Mr. Hubert de Givenchy’s legacy while bringing my own creative vision and I would like to sincerely thank the studio, Renaud de Lesquen, and LVMH for this incredible opportunity.”

Williams’s successor yet to be announced

Who will replace Matthew Williams is yet to be announced. For the time being, the house’s studio teams will step up and lead the brand’s designs. Rumour has it, some names have been already circulating as possible candidates to replace Williams. Those include Sarah Burton, Alessandro Michele (Gucci’s ex-creative), and Riccardo Tisci, who led Givenchy for a decade. But nothing is confirmed as of now.

Renaud de Lesquen, president and CEO of Givenchy, expressed his gratitude to Williams’s work in an official statement. “I would like to thank Matthew for all the energy he brought to Givenchy,” said Lesquen. “His collections, resolutely creative and contemporary, have sparked a new dynamic and found their audience. I join everyone who has had the pleasure of working with Matthew in wishing him every success in his next ventures.”
