Platform shoes have always been around but when Versace came out with their Medusa platform heels, the world became fully Bratz obsessed again. It would be wrong to say that platform shoes were not in style until then, there’s plenty of brands that have always had signature platform shoes. Just think of Naked Wolfe or Dr. Martens. However, when we speak high end, that’s a bit of a different story.
Versace, Valentino, Prada, Gucci … and many more
As we’ve mentioned above, the platform trend resurfaced with Versace Medusa heels. That was very closely followed by Valentino’s Garavani heels, which has become Versace’s Medusa heels closest competitor. Prada then came out with their Satin pumps followed by a sandal version as well. Gucci also introduced us to their Interlocking G leather platform sandals.
The real question, however, is, are platforms still in fashion? Although this type of platform is not the most sustainable trend in terms of longevity due to it being such a statement piece, we can still very much see chunky platforms on the runways.
During the Milan Fashion Week, Ermanno Scervino has included chunky platform in their fall/winter 2023 collection. Ganni came out with their Platform patent leather sandals and Versace introduced their upgraded version of their Medusa heels – Aevitas.
So what is the actual answer here? It is clear this will not be trendy forever, however, platforms are still very much the moment. And if you like platform shoes in general and are smart with your purchases (in terms of choosing versatile colours and styles), it can easily be turned into a timeless statement piece.
