Boyfriend makeover cheat sheet

It comes as no surprise that men tend to generally elevate their style once they get in a relationship. This little trick is called a “boyfriend makeover”. And please, don’t get us wrong, there’s many men who are doing a fine job on their own, but generally speaking, majority of men need that, so-called, second opinion, to help them unleash their full fashion potential. It’s just one of those perks that come with the relationship.

That being said, it’s 2023 and finding a partner is harder than getting approved for a mortgage. Listen, it’s tough out there. And that goes both ways. So whether you are a man looking to elevate your style without the help of a significant other or you are one of those lucky ones and are planning a “boyfriend makeover” but need some guidance, here is a little cheat sheet for you.

Ditch those skinny jeans

This just speaks for itself. Skinny jeans have no business in male fashion in 2023. If you are not a fan of looser styles, opt for straight or tailored trousers instead to achieve similar look only better.

Pull up your pants

Please, for the love of God, cover your underwear. Nobody wants to see you dragging your trousers on the floor and no one, we repeat, no one, cares about your boxers. Unless you want to give people the ick, learn how to wear trousers properly. Sorry for the direct language but it had to be said.

When in doubt – sandwich rule

This has become a big topic on TikTok and we pray it reaches the audience that needs to hear this. Sandwich rule is exactly what it sounds like, you match your top part to your bottom part. It’s up to you whether it’s in colour, cut or material (or all the above). You’re wearing green shoes? Choose a green top or a green jacket. You get out point. It will make you look put together and unify your outfit.

Don’t be afraid of accessories

This one is so important. We don’t even want to get into the number of men that refuse to incorporate accessories into their looks (some even refuse to incorporate their wedding rings, but that’s a conversation for another day). Especially if your style is more minimalistic, having a nice set of bracelets, rings or carefully picked necklaces will make your look stand out. The same goes for scarfs or gloves during winter months.

Know your correct size

This seems like such an obvious one, yet so many people are getting it wrong. It’s pretty simple – only because you can zip something up, doesn’t mean it fits you, and if something’s cut to be tailored and it’s loose on you, size down. There is a reason why they separate tailored and oversized styles.

Layers, Layers, Layers

T-shirt, shirt, jacket. Shirt, jumper, coat. Having a small sneak peek of a shirt collar and bottom trims under your jumper adds that extra something-something to you outfit. Just as much as adding a white T-shirt under your blue shirt. Don’t forget to incorporate layers.

Don’t skip levels

If you are fairly new to this whole fashion environment, start slower and find out what works for you. Stick to neutral colours and make your way through to more experimental looks. Don’t jump straight into mixing various colours and patters if you are not sure what works for you. Just remember – less is more.

Let’s not forget about hair, beard & nails

Your outfit can be top-notch but if your hair hasn’t been washed since last Christmas, your nails need a serious makeover and your beard has been living its own life, your look will automatically go downhill from an aesthetic point of view. If your goal is to look more put together, take care of the ‘beauty’ parts of your visage as well.

Be true to your style

Last but not least, please bear in mind that a ‘boyfriend makeover’ does not mean completely changing your style (unless that’s what you want to do). At least that is not what we are trying to achieve here. This cheat sheet is here to help you elevate your own style and add a little sprinkle on top. Be true to yourself and find your own unique way…with trousers sitting at your waist ๐Ÿ™‚
